If your child is at school, then you are probably looking for something that fits in with school hours, so that you do not have to pay for someone to look after them after school. A job in the school is the obvious choice but you do not have to go down that route, there are plenty of other options available. If your child is in daycare, then you have more flexibility as daycare hours are much longer than those of schools, and they also stay open during school holidays.
One thing you have to think about, is that neither schools nor childcarers will take in a sick child. You will need to stay home and look after them, unless there is someone else in the family that is willing and/or able to to this. Plus a sick child usually really wants their Mum, so you would be very torn by leaving them with someone else anyway. Parental leave is at your employers discretion. You may be lucky and be able to take the odd day here and there without losing holiday or pay, but of course, there are going to be employers who are less flexible with regards to such arrangements.
If you drop your child off at school in the car, before driving to work yourself, you are stopping your child from getting some important exercise. its known that exercise at the start of the day – as they would get from walking or biking to school, helps children to feel active and motivated. This obviously means that a motivated child is going to do better in lessons as they will be able to concentrate much better, for having got some fresh air and exercise.
After reviewing the points above, you may be concerned about returning to work, so how about thinking about a business based from home? Many more Mums are taking on this option now. Not only do you get complete flexibility over the hours that you work, but you can be at home when you need to be without any worries or pressures from your employer. Chat with other Mums at school who work or look online to get some ideas for what can be done from home.
Perhaps one of the biggest benefits in working for yourself from home, is the excellent option it provides for mums to stay at home and mind their kids but also to re-enter the workforce again. For many work-at-home mums, having their own business is a rewarding and highly satisfactory thing to do.
